Algae infestation Update Part 2

Got some more information from a source from Texas. Yes, Texas, the place with all the COWS. Was too lazy and sleepy to properly dissect it so here it is , in mass.*yawn*

Excessive Phytoplankton
(1) The abundance of planktonic algae (very green water) in a pond is generally related to the amount of nutrients present in the water. Nutrients can wash into the pond from woods, pastures, fields, human activities in the watershed, or come from pond fertilization.

Generally, the more nutrients, the more planktonic algae (or other aquatic plants) will grow or bloom. Although phytoplankton is good from an abundance of natural food and oxygen producing standpoint, it can become too abundant or excessive.

When phytoplankton become so abundant that water visibility is limited to less than 12 inches there is a danger of an oxygen depletion. These heavy or dense blooms use large amounts of dissolved oxygen at night and on very cloudy/overcast, windless days causing an oxygen depletion and fish kill.

This problem is often a consequence of overfertilizing, overfeeding, or excessive nutrients from livestock, fields, or septic lines.

Phytoplankton Die-off
(2)Phytoplankton populations, or blooms, can grow rapidly, particularly on sunny days when the water is warm and nutrients are available. Alternatively, they can die-off quickly, especially in the spring and fall as water temperatures change rapidly with weather fronts. However, a bloom die-off can occur at any time of the year with little or no warning.

Typically during a bloom die-off, the color of the water will start to change. Leading up to a bloom die-off the pond water may have a "streaky" appearance. Streaks of brown or gray-black through the otherwise green water of the pond is an indication that the algae are starting to die.

As the die-off progresses, the whole pond will turn from green to gray, brown, or clear. The pond water will typically clear after a die-off as the dead algae settle to the bottom.

Plankton die-offs cause rapid oxygen depletions for two reasons:

1) the remaining dissolved oxygen is consumed by aerobic bacteria and fungi in the process of decaying the dead algae

2) few live phytoplankton remain to produce more oxygen. Secchi disks can be used to monitor bloom densities. Any bloom that reduces visibility in the pond to 12 inches or less may cause oxygen problems.

Pies at last......

There! My Chicken Pies! As you see, these are not run-off-the-mill Chicken pies you find at Polar and bakeries. Mine is the genuine article and this Pic was NOT from the web. I took it myself.

More update on the algae, no water circulation is now a CERTAIN possibility.

PS : Whats so special about 29-30th May? Do I owe someone money on that days?

Algae Infestation (I want my Krabby Patty Secret Formula!!!!!) [ Got a clue what type of algae the pond is infested in]

That's right.The algae is planktonic algae and is described by my reference as 'Green Pea Soup'.*lol* The reference also provided some answers. *background* "The Krabby Patty Formula! Its finally mine after 20 long years......"No! That's the same one you grabbed when ya called all your country bumpkin relatives and.....arrgh never mind.* KER-FLICK!*
Right...the solutions.

1. The pond might have too small a pump/filter.
Remark: I'm not sure if this solution is possible as I had never seen the blueprints for the pond.

2.The pond is under full sunlight.
Remark: Obviously this is one of the reasons for the algae growth as the pond is under full sun at all times.

3.The pond is very shallow around the edges or water does not circulate in it.
Remark: I'm not sure if the pond is that shallow around the edges but from that day's observations, the water level had dropped by about 3cm. Water Circulation could be a possibility as I don't think a part of the school janitor's contract is ' Take Large Pole and Swirl pond Water Every day at 6pm ( try to kill as little tadpoles and guppies as possible)'

Pond Algae

Pond algae can turn water green, and also constrict the amount of oxygen the plants and animals are receiving.
Having a proper balance of plants and fish is an important factor. Fifty to seventy percent of the surface of the pond should be covered with plants. This will block the sunlight from reaching the bottom of the pond, and sunlight is what algae feeds off.
Submerged plants will also help slow down algae growth as they help balance the nutrients in your pond. Fish create bacteria and algae is more likely to grow in bacteria filled environments, in fact algae feeds off on fish excrement, so don’t have more fish then your pond can hold and don’t overfeed your fish.
Try using a UV sterilizer or a chemical treatment to get rid of algae.

Evil algae

algae is formed because of (needs) high temperatures, sunlight, warmth, stagnant water, things to let it grow on and carbon dioxide.

Because the plants at the bottom cannot make food (may be due to too many floating plants ) no rain...cold temperatures ... ... the plants cannot photosynthesise .. and thus not enough oxygen for fishes /tapoles and all on surface of pond ... and because of too many floating plants ... the plants that are fully submerged and cannot photosynthesize and it will have more carbon dioxide for algae to grow ...

The Algae Problem.

I found out a few solutions for the algae problem:
1. Add in prawns as they eat algae( very SLOW!!)
2. Add a sucking fish( if possible i donate mine)
3. Add in air pump/Filter(need electicity)
4. Use chemical( Able to buy from fish shop)
5. Add a UV light sterilliser( Very EXPENSIVE! And need electicity!)
6. Add covering to block direct sunlight

Algae growth need 3 key factors:
1. Strong sunlight(we have that)
2. Lots of Food like fish poo, thus creating ammonia( food for algae)
3. Carbon dioxide(the pond does not have enough oxygen)

i think tha t friends are super important because they support you most when you are in the darkest times.i have learnt many things about friend ship.first of all,friends do not need to stick to each other.even married couples do not do that.second of all,secondly,we must give each other some"my special alone time"time.And last,we must not bully others by saying light hearted words over again. light hearted words+ repeating=mess with mind=bullying=unhappiness.

algae algae and more algae!!!

Things needed for algae to grow so rapidly:
-lots of sunshine (above 39 degree celsiuos)
-stagnant water
-water
well, i think that the algae did not grow rapidly it is just that we did not discover it. I said that, because the condition seems unfavourable, the teperature within these few days is lower than 39 degree celsious about 32 to 35 degree celsious. But stagnant water is provided for the algae to grow as there is no raining for the past few days.

UNBREAKABLE FRIENDSHIP

Friendship is something that can last for forever.It is a way of connecting people together. for example friendship helps different races, girls and boys to cooperate regardless of what the other has done . real friends are people who listen to your probelms instead of using it as a help to make fun of you. a good friend cheers you up when you feel uneasy. I have many friends who helpme and whenever we get into a quarrel , we become friends the next day.

Friends are great!

Actually..I've never really had a real bestfriend. I just try not to have any like, BEST friends just incase i get hurt while doing so. Those who were with me for years, are super!! We stick like superglue, although sometimes we fight, its very fast before one of us says sorry.

I cope with big upsets or little upsets by calming down, thinking of what had just happened and then going to my friend to apologise. Its not very easy to say sorry, but if we are really in the wrong, we should do it no matter what, as we wont feel good without doing it.

A good friend to me is well, staying by your side when you are down, trying to cheer you up, rather than running you down and always discouraging you. One who cares about you, helps you, one who can keep secrets for you and not tell anyone, one who supports you up when you fall. And of course, when we quarrel, its better that we could get back together as friends again.
